Competition Will be Stiff for New Releases With 'Jumanji' Set to Remain #1

Competition Will be Stiff for New Releases With 'Jumanji' Set to Remain #1
This weekend sees Warner Bros.'s 12 Strong and STX's R-rated heist thriller Den of Thieves hitting theaters, both of which are targeting male audiences, which means they'll also have to contend with the NFL conference championship games this Sunday. Additionally, a couple of notable expansions are taking place this weekend along with Roadside's moderate release of Forever My Girl. That being said, all appear as if they'll be settling in behind last weekend's #1 and #2 films, as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Post are expected to hold on to those top two spots. Jumanji topped last weekend's box office after dropping just 24.5%, and this weekend it should continue to hold on rather well. While we're currently anticipating a drop around 32% and a fifth weekend around $19 million, don't be surprised if it hangs on a little better than that. The film should top $315 million domestically by end of day Sunday,

‘Justice League’ Blu-Ray Details and Box Art Revealed; No Zack Snyder Cut

‘Justice League’ Blu-Ray Details and Box Art Revealed; No Zack Snyder Cut
Fans clamoring to see the non-existent Zack Snyder cut of Justice League will be bummed to discover that Snyder’s iteration of the film, which almost certainly was never finalized, is not included on the home video release. Indeed, the Justice League Blu-ray details include a bunch of behind-the-scenes featurettes, but really nothing substantial to speak of. Unsurprisingly there’s no director’s commentary, no extended cut, and only a single deleted scene: “The Return of Superman.” While it’s true that Zack Snyder traditionally creates director’s extended cuts of his films—and the extended …

Sundance Questions: Here’s What We’re Wondering as the 2018 Festival Begins — IndieWire’s Movie Podcast

  • Indiewire
The Sundance Film Festival kicks off the year with a whole bunch of questions about the marketplace for independent films. This year, there are all-new uncertainties about the biggest buyers and their motives in an environment where stories about late-night negotiations often overwhelm those about the movies themselves. So what happens to the smaller films when everyone’s so focused on the price tag? And which movies are really worthy of discussion, whether or not they find distribution in Park City?

Last year, the biggest buyers were Amazon (“The Big Sick”) and Netflix (“Mudbound”). But with reports that Amazon may scale back on independent film and growing concerns about Netflix’s disinterest in the theatrical business, what are the most viable options for Sundance films?
