Why Hollywood's Pay Gap for Women of Color Is Wider: Infrequent "Golden Opportunities"

Why Hollywood's Pay Gap for Women of Color Is Wider: Infrequent
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Taraji P. Henson was paid in the low-six figures and had to cover her own lodging during the three-month New Orleans shoot. "The math really is pretty simple: There are way more talented black actresses than there are intelligent, meaningful roles for them," she wrote in her 2016 memoir, Around the Way Girl. "This is exactly how a studio can get away with paying the person whose name is third on the call sheet of a big-budget film less than 2 percent what it's paying the...

The Hard Truth About Hollywood's Gender Pay Gap: Optics vs. Reality

The Hard Truth About Hollywood's Gender Pay Gap: Optics vs. Reality
<!--[Cdata[

On Jan. 7, Debra Messing stood before E! cameras and slammed the network's executives for, as she put it, "[not] paying their female co-hosts the same as male co-hosts." The swipe followed Catt Sadler's December departure, which, the former host wrote in a now-viral blog post, came after E! wouldn't pay her what Jason Kennedy was making. "So," Messing continued, on-message in her black gown, "we stand with [Catt]."

And just like that, Sadler's situation got swept up in the #MeToo movement, with prominent actresses from Eva Longoria to Sarah Jessica Parker actively piling on. A deluge of news...

Ann Curry said she was "not surprised" by "inappropriate sexual behavior" allegations against her former Today co-host Matt Lauer in her first television interview since the scandal occurred.

Speaking to CBS This Morning Wednesday, Curry said, "I can tell you that I am not surprised by the allegations" that led to Lauer's firing in late November 2017.

"I would be surprised if many women did not understand that there was a climate of verbal harassment that existed. I think it would be surprising if someone said they didn't see that," Curry added of working at Today.

’12 Strong’ Film Review: Chris Hemsworth Leads the Charge in a Powerful Afghanistan Story

’12 Strong’ Film Review: Chris Hemsworth Leads the Charge in a Powerful Afghanistan Story
Now in its 17th year, the war in Afghanistan is the longest armed conflict in U.S. history. The new military drama “12 Strong,” whose primary visual draw is U.S. troops on horseback shooting at the Taliban with machine guns, understands the reasons for that intractability. Helmed by Danish commercial director Nicolai Fuglsig, the Chris Hemsworth vehicle is is often hammy, but also wryly funny, breath-stoppingly tense, and uncommonly intelligent. Its January dump is a disservice to a promising debut feature. In almost any other situation, it would be inconceivable to think of the U.S. armed forces — the most formidable...

Film Review: ’12 Strong’

Film Review: ’12 Strong’
Sixteen years after U.S. troops landed in Afghanistan, the conflict there might be summed up as a violent holding pattern, or a stalemate we’re still mired in, or — if you squint hard enough — a slow-motion qualified success. But only the producer Jerry Bruckheimer would seek to portray it as a victory decisive enough to be called a triumph of the kick-ass American spirit.

“12 Strong,” one of those rare “serious” Bruckheimer productions, tells the story of the first U.S. soldiers to land in Afghanistan in the days after 9/11: the members of Oda 595, an elite Special Forces unit that was ordered to link up with a local warlord and fight its way, village by village, to the Taliban stronghold of Mazar-i-Sharif (the country’s fourth largest city). There, they would theoretically gut the Taliban’s nexus of power and topple the ability of Afghanistan to serve as a training ground for Al Qaeda troops.

Sundance in the Post-Weinstein Age: "You Won't See Those Massive Parties"

Sundance in the Post-Weinstein Age:
<!--[Cdata[

The specter of Harvey Weinstein — onetime Sundance king and now pariah — looms large as dealmakers descend on Park City for this year's festival and market.

The indie film world continues to soul search in the wake of revelations that its most visible figure allegedly raped and sexually harassed women, including actresses Rose McGowan and Louisette Geiss, at the festival itself. Weinstein's football- viewing party on the fest's first Sunday was always a must for sellers and talent; he presided over it like the Mayor of Park City — which, at least for 10 days in January, he...
